A Lasting Legacy: The Best Quotes About Dixie Dean

To celebrate the legacy of one of the greatest footballers the world has seen, we take a look at some of the best quotes about Dixie Dean.

Having signed for Everton in 1925, Dixie Dean?scored a total of?383 goals in 433 appearances for the team, an exceptional strike-rate which includes 37 hat-tricks.

A true gentleman on and off the field, Dixie was adored by the fans.?Over his career he was renowned for being an amazing role model, so there?s no surprise that tributes to him continue to flood in.

Here are some of our favourite quotes describing the late, great Dixie Dean.

Legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly arguably gave one of the best quotes about Dixie:

“Dixie was the greatest centre forward there will ever be. His record of goalscoring is the most amazing thing under the sun. He belongs in the company of the supremely great like Beethoven, Shakespeare and Rembrandt.”

After Dixie Dean sadly passed away, at his funeral Bill Shankly came out with one of his humorous statements:

?Dixie Dean dead could draw a bigger crowd than today?s Everton, live.?

Scottish international footballer and Everton teammate, Alex Young commented on Dixie’s amazing legacy.

“Dixie was unique. A legend. An icon. The superlatives rain upon him and rightly so because his feats still seem unbelievable. I feel privileged and honoured to be one of the players to have pulled on that Everton No.9 jersey and followed in the footsteps of a football giant.”

After Australian footballer Tim Cahill hit a Dixie milestone, he commented on the class of the great player.

“I hold the record now with Dixie Dean for being the only Everton player to score three Merseyside derby goals at Anfield. I still hope to better it. Things like that, the fans never forget.”

When the amazing Dixie Dean statue was unveiled outside Goodison Park, chairman Bill Kenwright said a few moving words about Everton’s hero.

?The word legend is a much abused and over-used word in our game. Today we salute probably the greatest hero of all time ? our beloved William Ralph ?Dixie? Dean.
??He was an inspiration to his fellow footballers. He was a God to them and he was terrifying to the opposing team. Dixie Dean?s memory will never be forgotten by people who love football. Today, we celebrate the greatest goal machine in the history of world football.?

Matt Busby, Scottish football player and manager, described a game where he played again Dean in the 1933 Cup final for Manchester City.

“It was both a delight and a nightmare to play against him, he was extremely adept on the ground yet extraordinary in the air.”

What an outstanding player Dixie Dean was. From legendary footballers to commentators and fans, Dixie Dean was known as a true gent and an extraordinary talent by all.
