Dixie Dean?s record of 60 goals in a single season may never be broken ? not by anyone mortal that is. So, in honour of the greatest goal scorer to have ever lived, we decided to take a closer look at those who have come close (but not close enough) to breaking his seemingly unbreakable record.
In his own words, indeed, when asked whether or not he believed his record would ever be broken, Dixie said:
?I think it will. But there?s only one man who?ll do it. That?s the fellow that walks on water. I think he?s about the only one.?

Honourable Mentions include players playing abroad. In the 2011-12 La Liga season, Barcelona?s Lionel Messi scored a whopping 50 goals in 37 matches ? falling just 10 goals short of Dixie Dean?s record.
Ferenc Deak, however, surpassed Dixie Dean?s record in 1945-46. Playing for Hungarian side Szentlorinci Atletikai Club, Deak scored 66 league goals. Dixie Dean?s record was also broken by Archibald McPherson, who scored 67 times for Bethlehem Steel in the United States; while Refik Resmja, who scored 59 goals in the Albanian League, and Pele, who scored 58 times in Brazil came extremely close.

So, that concludes our look at Dixie Dean?s record and those who have came close to breaking it.
