Dixie Dean is a true Everton icon and footballing legend, to celebrate the legacy of Dixie Dean we wanted to take a look through some of the most touching tributes to one of the greatest footballers of all time.
In total, Dixie Dean scored 383 goals for Everton in 433 appearances, an exceptional strike-rate which includes 37 hat-tricks.
During the legendary 1927-28 season, Dixie memorably scored an outstanding record 60 league goals, winning Everton the First Division title.
Over his career he was renowned for being a true gentlemen and a role model, so there’s no surprise that tributes to him continue to flood in, here are some of our favourites.
In May 2017, Everton revealed their home kit for the?2017-18 season, with the traditional blue shirts featuring a tribute to legendary striker Dixie Dean in the form of a silhouette on the back of the collar.
The depiction of Dean, who is said to have run 2.5 miles from his home to sign his first contract with the club at 18, was chosen in a vote by supporters earlier in the season.?The iconic silhouette of Dean scooped 47 per cent of votes in a poll.
The shirt includes the classic Umbro diamond pattern running down the sleeves with a similar design in a blue panel on the side of the white shorts, a stunning tribute to the legacy of Dixie Dean.
Nick Mernock, chair of the Fans? Forum, said: ?Dixie Dean is an Everton icon and his presence on the home shirt will ensure we can continue to tell his story to a new generation of Blues.?
In 2014, Everton unveiled a stunning Wall of Fame at Goodison Park, dedicated to Dixie Dean.
Remembering their greatest goalscorer, the wall features engraved plaques named ‘Goodison Granites’ for the fans and Evertonians, securing their personal piece of history on their beloved stadium.
It sits behind the amazing statue, which was officially unveiled in May 2001 and designed by local sculptor Tom Murphy.
As well as the stunning statue of Dixie that sits proudly outside the gates of Goodison, there is soon to be another amazing tribute to the legend.
A new statue of Mersey football legends Bill Shankly and Dixie Dean will be unveiled next year – to celebrate the launch of a new football quarter in the city.
The sculpture has been commissioned by Signature Living and will be located between their existing Shankly Hotel and planned Dixie Dean Hotel, which is due to open next summer.
The iconic pair will stand side-by-side, arm in arm, to indicate the friendship they enjoyed in retirement from the game.
It is hoped that the bronze statue will mark the beginning of the city?s new ?football quarter? on Victoria Street.
First created in 1980, just months after the death of the greatest footballer in British football history, the Dixie Dean Award is an amazing lasting legacy.
More than merely celebrating his sporting achievement, the award was initiated as a lasting tribute to his sportsmanship, discipline and inspirational qualities.
Each year, the award is given to someone who embodies many of Dixie?s amazing virtues, the first recipient was Liverpool’s Ian?Callaghan in 1981.
The 25 winners who followed Callaghan reflect a who?s who of some of the most respected names in football.
The last in our favourite tributes to the legacy of Dixie Dean is, of course, the Dixie Dean Hotel.
Announced earlier this year, it will follow the same footprint as the wildly successful Shankly Hotel, incorporating the life and times of the famous Everton goal scorer.
Located in the magnificent and historic Jerome and Carlisle Buildings, The Dixie Dean hotel will be developed by Signature Living to feature unique rooms, Dixie Dean memorabilia and a bar & restaurant, as well as being a stunning wedding and events venue.
A truly outstanding celebration of the legacy of Dixie Dean, this hotel promises to be one of the most popular and luxurious hotels in the heart of Liverpool.
